Maggie Groat, S LOWER F: ACTIVITY BOOK
Arya and Hamid Eshghi Forum and South Gallery
Over the past two years Maggie Groat’s material research has explored the possibilities of slowness, healing, sleep, and play as acts of resistance and refusal. S LOWER F: ACTIVITY BOOK is the fourth chapter of this ongoing project. Using her characteristic methods of analog collage and assemblage from found materials, the artist experiments with familiar forms of visual games to propose open-ended rules of play in works that invite imaginative interaction by visitors of all ages. For Groat, games are compelling because of their world-building possibilities. She considers the role of immersive imagination as a coping strategy for life together during intersecting emergencies and, perhaps more powerfully, as a philosophical exploration of other realities.
Hannah Rickards, I am the infant and I am the bird
North Gallery and Media Gallery
Hannah Rickards’s practice studies the relationship between perception and experience. She uses a range of conceptual tools and media to plot the role of uncertainty in our attempts to discern and describe our environment. While the question of where and how we place our attention has always been fundamental to the artist, I am the infant and I am the bird marks a metabolic shift in Rickard’s practice. In their meditations on distance, place, and temporality (whether considering the movements of hummingbirds or geological forms), the exhibition’s new video installations and still images resonate with early interpretations of the photographic image, which was understood not as “captured” or “taken” but as something received from the world.
