Exhibiting artist Leslie J. Fawkes is joined on the gallery floor by printmaker Val Loewen to discuss printmaking techniques and the important role that Malaspina Printmakers Society has played in the development of experimental printing practices on the west coast. Organized in collaboration with Malaspina Printmakers Society, this event also marks the artist run centre’s fiftieth year of operation.

Leslie J. Fawkes, an artist hailing from North Vancouver, embarked on her artistic journey in the early 1980s at Emily Carr College of Art and Design on Granville Island. Fawkes' portfolio is distinguished by its bold and bright aesthetic, characterized by a striking use of screen printing, acrylic painting on paper, and oil stick drawings on paper. Her art prominently features nude singular figures, couples, and male/female forms, presented with a compelling combination of sensitivity and boldness. Previously, Fawkes' art has been exhibited and represented by galleries such as Crown Galleries and Onley Gallery in Vancouver, as well as Marianne Partlow Gallery in Washington state.
Val Loewen (she/her/hers) is an artist practising on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm(Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. Her practice is based primarily in print media and intersects with other material based methodologies through which she investigates ideas of transformational narratives and visual histories. She works collaboratively with artists and community members to facilitate the exploration of material based artistic practices and expand the notion of print media within a contemporary arts context. She has practised as an artist and culture worker at various printmaking centres in Vancouver since 2012 including: the Print and Publishing Festival in Dawson City - Yukon, Malaspina Printmakers Society in Vancouver-BC, the Art History and Visual Arts department at UBC, and Mobil Art School in Vancouver. She is currently the Studio Access and Equity Manager at Malaspina Printmakers Society and has previously mentored artists who have been the recipients of Professional Development Grants from Canada Arts Council and BC Arts Council.
