Hand-Drawn Animation with Lee J. Holoubek

Teen Art Lab

A tabletop scene featuring a partially completed drawing on white paper. The drawing consists of multiple cartoon-style faces depicted in soft colours. Surrounding the faces are abstract shapes in yellow, green, and blue. A hand is shown using a black chalk-like medium to add details to one of the faces. Nearby, there are art supplies, including a yellow cup, a white marker, and a wooden box containing pastels. The tabletop has a green cutting mat underneath.

Set your art in motion with experimental animator Lee J. Holoubek!

The focus of this beginner workshop is to transform sequential drawings of a simple character into a collaborative analogue animation. You'll learn how to illustrate movement through two-dimensional images, opening up your potential for expressive storytelling. Through hands-on exercises and experiments with a variety of drawing media, Lee will guide you through various exercises that seemingly breathe life into your drawings.

All drawings will be photographed during the workshop, assembled into a video file, and sent to participants after the workshop.

Please note: Upon registering, a parent or guardian will need to sign a consent form on behalf of their teen.

This workshop is generously supported by the Tuey Charitable Foundation, the Deux Mille Foundation, the Hamber Foundation, and Friends of the Gibson
